LEADERSHAPE 2019
On Saturday December 14th, I began my five night Leadershape experience at Higher Grounds Camp in Indiana. As did most of my friends coming, I really just wanted to go home, but I decided to commit to making the most I could of this experience. I'm truly thankful for this decision, as this week was transformative for the way I look at the future and myself. All I really knew going into the camp was that it focused on leadership. The program focuses on a holistic approach, focusing on self-reflection, societal reflection, and developing this to form a vision for change in the world. I felt validated by the strengths and fears that I discovered within myself. It was also powerful to realize just how much my peers at this camp were passionate about making change in the world.
The vision I developed was to eliminate carbon emissions in the world. These visions weren't supposed to be something we would achieve in our life, but more of a beacon to represent the changes we want to look towards and consider in our future. This was a valuable experience for taking the experiences we gained during the week, and focusing that towards something concrete. For example, when I was first developing my vision, I received valuable feedback on areas such as affordability that I hadn't fully considered, and I was able to relate the importance of this feedback to the context of society that I developed at Leadershape.
I think the true value of this experience going forward will be in the way I am able to apply my vision and increased awareness of myself and others to my future. I personally am constantly planning for where I want my life to go, and I now feel like I have a renewed purpose to use my vision as a test to see if I'm doing something to create change towards my vision. For example, with my planned career in Architectural Engineering/Urban Planning, I will have plenty of opportunity to put myself in a position and lead change related to carbon emissions, and I feel charged to make the most of that opportunity.
